OR WHEN IT'S A YEAR FROM NOW AND I CAN'T REMEMBER
BECAUSE I HAVE A TERRIBLE MEMORY

First, I have been wanting to start a garden and grow my own vegetables since about 2014.
I had tried to keep houseplants, but they would die pretty quickly. This is my favorite story from the years that I thought I had the anti-green-thumb:
I saw that a lady was selling some pretty neat plants in an antiques store, so I talked to her about which ones were the most hardy. She says to get the Jade plant, "It only needs watering once a week, just a little bit of water, and this one in particular is like 10 years old or something to that effect."
So I brought it home... this super old, beautiful, strong plant... and I killed it. I was a plant murderer.
I think Mom brought it back to life but I'm not sure. I actually searched my Instagram for a photo I posted of it, and I found it (from 131 weeks ago). That caption though.
This summer I was thrilled to try gardening because I would be living with my parents for a few months after I graduated college and they have some space in the backyard for plantventures (I just decided to make this word up). My first veggie attempt ever.
I might attach images later of the progress but I photographed the plants all summer.
For my first ever garden, I grew zucchini squash, cucumbers, in ground tomatoes, upside-down tomatoes, and finally, sugar baby watermelon.
I mainly got cucumbers all summer... and I think the cucumbers bred with the zucchini since I planted them so close together. It was hilarious.
I got one enormous, ridiculous zucchini, and one teeny tiny baby watermelon. The upside down tomatoes were the best at first, but then they died.... I was so sad because they made me so excited. But I read it's because the plants recognize that they're upside-down, something funky happens with the roots, and the nutrients from the soil get washed out basically. The roma tomatoes are actually just now growing, which is funny. It's November 1st in North Carolina! But I waited a long time to plant, so it's exciting that they grew at all.
It was really fun to walk past them every day. I got to see how they were doing and what kind of progress they made. I swear every time I saw a flower, I freaked out haha.
And my dad had a basil plant that I watched grow too! I liked to pretend it was a bit of a loner plant, because it was by itself (...ha).
Anyway... this blog is mostly for me, because I've realized in the last few years that I really like plants, like, more than a lot of people do. I'm not an expert. I'm not even kind of a hobbyist really. I just want to have a record of the plants in my life, and a blog seemed like the best way to do that.
Right after I planted them
After they'd grown a bit
Baby sugar baby watermelon plants
Upside down tomatoes
I cut a path and tree limbs so you could get to this bench, near my plants
Mittens was thrilled
Wedding succulent progress, and the babies that came off of them
THE HUGE ZUCCHINI
Why did I think planting these so close together would be a great plan
I was so proud though
My first garden hahaha. Right out of undergraduate, didn't do almost any research. Just planted some stuff
These plants made me so happy :)
Dad's basil!!
Cutting the poor succulents because they were freaking tall
This is all out of order, but tomatoes again
So, Mom hired someone to power wash our house, and I didn't tell them to watch out for my plants... so they got covered in bleach water. Luckily they survived for the most part
In ground tomatoes. Weirdly, they actually produced sometime in November - since I planted them so late
BONUS - wedding photographer Amy Ellis' photos of my succulents at the wedding. The ones that I deem worthy of giving out as favors haha and after they had been pruned blah blah etc
